It’s time for another Positively Roasted Review! Today, I’d like to tell you about Cafe on the Ave. Though their cups aren’t cutely branded, nor their sign neon and iconic, don’t let that fool you; their coffees are bold. But, before we get to that, let’s talk about the atmosphere of the place.
The music! Oh my goodness the music there, y’all!! It’s so chill, jazzy, bluesy, contemporary, relaxing, and somehow energizing all at the same time! At least, it’s been like that every time I’ve gone in so far. I love it! The staff is always super friendly, too. They keep behind a plastic partition, as per COVID guidelines, and are super nice about answering any questions about the drinks. Plus, there are so many non-dairy options there. Seriously. Soy, almond, coconut, oat, and hemp milk. Prefer dairy? They’ve got that, too.
There’s also free wifi and roofed patio seating at Cafe on the Ave, although it can be a little cold this time of year. But it sure is nice to sit out and watch the rain! Oh, and they have a punch card, so every 10th drink is free. Plus, they’re open until 10pm and even serve alcoholic beverages. I wish I woulda known about this place when I drank, because their beer is only $4, which is a steal for Seattle!
First, I tried the Gingerbread Latte, with hemp milk. I’m not kidding when I say it tasted just like gingerbread! It was just before the holidays and perfectly festive. The other day I tried their Matcha Latte with oat milk and the sleeve they put on the cup was beyond adorable. It had an illustration of a cute little orange cat-creature lifting a stick with a bucket on each end. The cat-creature wears one of those old, frilly collar things that looks like a tutu, and the buckets are labeled “hope” and “more hope”. I don’t know why, but the other times I’ve been there they haven’t put sleeves on the cups. Oh well. Anyways, the Matcha Latte was better than Starbucks! It was super creamy and tasted more like green tea than any other matcha I’ve ever had. Starbucks matcha tastes like grass in comparison. No offense, Starbs.
Today I got a Mayan Mocha. What’s that, you may ask? It’s a spiced, chocolaty coffee, and I would highly recommend it! It was smooth, creamy, and spice-y with a hint of cinnamon to complement the dark chocolate flavor. Their sizes are Italian, like Starbucks, and when you get the venti (large) you can choose between 2, 3, or 4 shots of espresso at no extra cost!
Along with the Mayan Mocha, I decided to try their avocado toast. Served on soft, thick bread, this avocado toast has something that many other places don’t; garlic sauce! It’s topped with salt, pepper, and a touch of cayenne pepper, which I thought paired exceptionally well with the Mayan Mocha. And the avocado was just green enough to be creamy without getting mushy. Yum!
I’ll keep you updated as I try more of their menu items. But for now, if you’re in the Seattle area, I’d highly recommend Cafe on the Ave!
