K.I.S.S. Your Bad Writing Habits Goodbye

Do you want to improve your writing skills? What if I told you that you’re just a K.I.S.S. away from turning your writing from a frog into a prince?

No, no, not that kind of kiss!

K.I.S.S. is an acronym. It means “Keep It Simple, Stupid” or “Keep It Short and Simple,” though I prefer “Keep It Simple, Silly.” It’s all the same, really.

The K.I.S.S. principle can be applied to anything, not just writing. Even Einstein believed in the power of simplicity, and worked to simplify his formulas as much as he was able.

β€œThe definition of genius is taking the complex and making it simple.”

Albert Einstein

Now, I could write a standard 1,500 – 2,000 word blog post optimized for search engines telling you to keep it simple using far too many words, but I’m not going to do that. All you need to know to be a better writer is to keep it simple, silly!

That doesn’t mean write less. In fact, it might be easier for you to write more! Keep the K.I.S.S. principle in mind while writing, and keep it in mind while editing, too. Maybe you’ll like it, and maybe you won’t!

How I Use the K.I.S.S. Method

Even though I remind myself to Keep It Simple, Silly, while writing, it just doesn’t always work out like that. In fact, I almost prefer to write more words than necessary.

It’s more important at the beginning to just get those words out and onto paper or a screen. See, sometimes I might not have a plan, or a theme, or a goal in mind. I’ll just write to write. It’s easier to get to the core message of what I’m trying to say when I have all of the words in front of me.

Then I can cut back and rearrange and reword until it’s perfect.

I like to imagine that I’m throwing all of the words into a pot. The pot starts off full, but once you apply heat you can boil it down to its essence, making it more concentrated, more powerful.

Unedited writing can seem watered down. The ideas are there, but they end up diluted with filler words and redundancies.

But now you can K.I.S.S. those bad habits goodbye for good!
