I’ve been trying to come up with my own recipes more often. However, I’ve also spent 72 hours this week working, and that’s not including all the work I’ve put into this website! Plus, I take the bus, so that’s an added 1.5 hour in transit every day. Needless to say, I’ve been a little bit lazy when it comes to cooking.
As much as I’d love to order out every day, that sort of lifestyle just doesn’t fit my budget at the moment. So, I decided to give Amazon Kitchen a try. I would rather support small businesses, of course, but this fits my budget for now. That being said, as soon as my budget allows, I’ll stop shopping at Amazon. Ain’t no reason to give more money to a billionaire who doesn’t pay taxes!
But until then…..here we are.
What Is Amazon Kitchen?
Amazon Kitchen is a part of Amazon Fresh. And what is Amazon Fresh? Amazon Fresh is a grocery delivery service available in select cities. As a grocery service, it accepts all sorts of payment methods, including SNAP EBT benefits. Amazon Prime members get free delivery on orders over $35, and can choose a 2-hour delivery time-window to have their groceries delivered in.
Amazon Fresh delivery services are currently available in these cities:
- Las Vegas
- Los Angeles
- New York
- San Diego
- San Francisco
- Washington, D.C.
Amazon Fresh delivers all sorts of groceries, from foodstuff to personal care. Amazon Kitchen, on the other hand, is a brand within Fresh that provides meal kits, ready made meals, and kitchen supplies. Many of their meal kits, such as the Sweet Chile Chicken one that I’ll be reviewing down below, are no-prep kits. This just means that you don’t have to do any cutting, chopping, measuring, mixing, or anything except throw everything in a pan and get cooking!
After placing my order, I had to wait a couple of hours to get my groceries. No biggie. I placed the order at 5:30 pm, and chose a delivery window of 8-10 pm. Everything arrived by 9 pm, smack dab in the middle of the delivery window. Like other Amazon Prime services, Amazon Fresh deliveries offer mobile tracking services and no-contact delivery.
Oh, and did I mention they deliver alcohol, too? Just be sure to have your ID with you when you answer the door!
One of the nicer things about Amazon Fresh, and Prime in general, is that the packaging they use for deliveries is recyclable. Not only that, but it’s also insulated, so it keeps your groceries fresh while in transit. Most of the packaging used can be directly recycled in curbside recycling bins, and generally includes insulated plastic bags and cardboard, though sometimes dry ice is also included to maintain cold temperatures for perishables.
The Sweet Chile Chicken No-Prep Meal Kit
I’ve never used a meal-kit before (unless Lunchables count), but this went pretty much as expected. The container itself was essentially the same as a Lunchables container but bigger; each ingredient was in it’s own section of a plastic container with a peel-off plastic covering.
The ingredients were super simple. Raw chicken chunks, chopped green onion, sliced water chestnuts, sliced green pepper, chopped baby corn, a bag of basmati rice, and a packet of sweet chile sauce.
The directions were just as simple, and only required one pan.
Cook the chicken in oil for 4 minutes, then add the veggies for 3 minutes. While that’s cooking, microwave the rice for 2 minutes. Mix sauce with water and add to pan for 30 seconds. This meal literally only took 7 minutes to prepare!
I only cooked half of the meal kit, and sort of messed up. See, the directions say to mix the sauce with 1/3 cup of water before adding to the pan. I ended up mixing half a packet of sauce with 1/3 cup of water, instead of just 1/6 cup of water. Oh well. Believe it or not, it was still pretty decent, even with watered down sauce!
How Did it Taste?
For only $15 and 7 minutes, it wasn’t half bad. In fact, I have to say that even with watered down sauce, it was actually pretty darn good. Personally, I think it would have been better with jasmine rice, but that’s only because I’m not a huge fan of basmati rice to begin with.
The mild and crispy water chestnuts paired excellently with the snappy baby corns and sweet bell pepper. The chicken was tender and juicy, and the sweet chile sauce was flavorful and, well, sweet, even when watered down!
Overall, I really enjoyed the textural combinations of the vegetables in this dish when paired with the chicken. The serving sizes, however, were a tad small for my appetite, and I could have easily eaten the whole kit for lunch. That being said, the only dishes I needed to clean were a pan, a bowl, and 2 forks(one for cooking and one for eating), which was a huge plus.
Rating the Amazon Kitchen Sweet Chile Chicken Meal Kit
2 meals for $15 is a steal, especially for Seattle!
Delivery showed up within chosen time slot, and the items were fresh and undamaged.
This meal was ready so darn quickly! 7 minutes for fresh stir-fry isn’t too bad at all.
This meal took slightly more effort than a microwave dinner, but tasted so much better than anything frozen would have.
The only reason I’m not giving this a full 5 stars is because I messed up the sauce. Otherwise, it was good!
So quick and easy! It took less time to clean up after this meal than it took to cook it.
For the price, time, and effort involved, I would for sure give this meal kit 5 stars. Does this mean that this was a Michelin 5 star meal? By no means! It just means that I have no complaints about the food, or the experience overall. It was an all-around pleasant experience, and I’ll for sure be ordering this meal-kit again.
