A Dream of Lakshmi

For the second time in my life, I’ve dreamt of a Hindu deity. The first time, bathed in sunlight and surrounded with the scent of fresh lavender, I was brought to the ocean. A giant sunflower, taller than a high-rise, approached me, lowered a leaf, and let me climb onto the giant ‘palm.’

With bounding steps, we crossed the water to arrive on a mountain. The Sunflower set me down and died. While on the mountain, a ball of light started growing in the sky, growing brighter as it got nearer, until eventually it was Ganesha sitting in lotus pose on the mountain. He said to me,

You will grow,

and then I woke up. I was maybe 15, 16 years old when I dreamt that, I think. Still in high school, still living with my mom, unsure of what I wanted to do in life or, well, unsure of everything, really.

Ganesha, if you don’t know, is the Hindu god beginnings, wisdom and success, amongst other things. He has an elephant head, and is often known to be the remover of obstacles.

In 10 days, I’ll be 24. Yesterday was my first day of training at work, which will lead to a (slight) raise. Yesterday was also my first day back at college, where I’m now officially working towards my second bachelors degree. It was a busy day. Oh, yeah, and I picked up the keys to my very first apartment yesterday, too!

Last night, I dreamt of Lakshmi. In the dream, I was walking outside, and came upon a stone ledge with words engraved on it, though I don’t remember any of the words other than

Love.

And so, in order to remember the words, I pulled out my camera and crouched down to get a picture. Yet I forgot the words when I woke up. Go figure.

As I pointed the camera at the words, though, more words appeared. The only one I remember is

Her.

Beyond the stone ledge, golden and glowing in the sky, there she was. Lakshmi was smiling down on me! But I could only see her through the camera lens.

Love Her.

Lakshmi is the Hindu goddess of wealth, self-knowledge and liberation, amongst other things. She’s also said to have adopted Ganesha! They’re very often worshipped together. Wisdom, wealth, overcoming obstacles, liberation; they go hand in hand.

Here’s a piece of a song from Constantina Rhodes’s Invoking Lakshmi: The Goddess of Wealth in Song and Ceremony:

Through illusion,
A person can become disconnected,
From his higher self,
Wandering about from place to place,
Bereft of clear thought,
Lost in destructive behavior.
It matters not how much truth,
May shine forth in the world,
Illuminating the entire creation,
For one cannot acquire wisdom,
Unless it is experienced,
Through the opening on the heart....
