Tales From Retail: Signs

So a lady comes up to the only closed register at work and sets her stuff down right next to a sign that reads “THIS REGISTER IS CLOSED.”

Right across from it, facing her, was the only other register, and it didn’t have a closed sign put up. I was doing something else away from the register, but within eyesight since I’m the cashier.

She begins to look around with the same look on her face that customers always have when they’re ready to check out; lost, maybe a little confused, as if they’re not quite sure what’s going on.

That look is my cue; it’s how I know that people are done shopping and not just going up to the counter to set their stuff down (which happens remarkably often.)

When I get up to the register, I say to her,

“That register is closed,” and motion towards the sign. “But I can help you over on this side,” already punching the register code into the system.

Bewildered, she looks at the sign, though I’m not quite sure if she read it. She sure didn’t read it the first time.

“Oh! okay,” she says.

She collects her stuff and walks over to the other side of the counter, sets her stuff down. It was quiet while I rung up all of her items.

She was buying 16 books, but couldn’t take the time to read one sign!

Epilogue

Hey there babes, I’ve decided I want to quit my day job! Well, I’ve known that I’ve wanted to quit for a while now, but I’ve only recently figured out how I’m gonna be able to do it. I don’t want to go into details about it just yet, but it has to do with Freshly Stale and I’m so super excited about it! ❤ Don’t worry, an official announcement post is coming this Wednesday!

And so, I’ll be sharing some stories to both commemorate my time working retail, and to remind myself why I never want to work retail ever again! Plus, I could really use the storytelling practice!

Do you have any retail stories you’d like to share? I’d love to hear them, so please feel free to post them in the comments below!

Thanks for reading! Don’t forget to like and follow for more Freshly Stale content! 😊
